Why you should be aware of the version of PHP on your host server

We get this question a lot, so we thought it was time to talk about PHP.

PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a general-purpose scripting language geared towards web development. It was originally created by Danish-Canadian programmer Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994.

PHP is a server side scripting language that is embedded in HTML. It is used to manage dynamic content, databases, session tracking, even build entire e-commerce sites. It is integrated with a number of popular databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Sybase, Informix, and Microsoft SQL Server.

Why is it important to update PHP version?
One of the most important reasons to update PHP is to ensure you are running on a version that is fully supported and patched regularly for security vulnerabilities. It is important to note though, that some operating system vendors still update older versions of PHP.

Does PHP version matter?
PHP versions are the engine that runs almost everything. It matters, and you can improve your speed, security and compatibility, by watching what version your site uses.

How do I know my PHP Host version?
If you have cPanel installed on your hosting, you can check the PHP version via control panel. Log into cPanel. Under Software, click on Select PHP version. This will open a new page, on which you will see a current version of PHP.

How often does PHP need to be updated?
PHP has to be updated on a regular basis, just like WordPress core, themes, and plugins. With PHP, each version receives support for two years after its initial release, then there is a period of another year where critical security updates are released as they’re needed.

In conclusion, if you have a CMS website you need to be aware of the PHP version on your server (hosting provider). If you don’t, you could be letting security vulnerabilities in, slowing down your site speed and sometimes, breaking functionality elements of your site.  Monthly maintenance and updates are strongly recommended.
