2023 Web Trends – part one

Some trends come and go. Some stick around.  And others arrive due to statistics and usability tests.
Here are some of the notable 2023 web trends.

Increased Web Accessibility
Although the DOJ guidelines don’t include hard-and-fast rules businesses must follow, they do offer some guidance on eliminating barriers to accessibility. As a result, one of the biggest web design trends of 2023 is the demand for accessible designs.

Mobile-Friendly Designs
A responsive site should adapt to different devices, from tiny smartphones to tablets with 12-inch screens, to give every user a positive experience. You also need to think about the size of the buttons in your designs, as many people operate their smartphones with their thumbs instead of their index fingers.

Nostalgia and the Y2K aesthetic
Some designers are taking this trend in a retrofuturist direction, using the aesthetics of Vaporwave, Glitch, and Cybercore. Others are just incorporating specific elements of Y2K design, like retro typeface use, pixelated fonts and images, or custom cursors.

Custom Typefaces
You can approach this trend a few different ways, depending on the effect you’re trying to create and your level of experience with illustration and lettering techniques. Font generator tools like BitFontMaker, FontStruct, and Calligraphr give you different ways of building, downloading, and using your original font.

Video content
Short videos help to entice users and have a higher retention rate. When done correctly and professionally, they are impactful and leave a lasting impression.

Illustrations with dimensionality
While 3D illustration has been a trend in previous years, it was more exclusively an illustration style. Current sites are beginning to add dimensionality in a more immersive way, pulling users into cyberspace by adding animations, full-page effects, and multi-layered illustrations.

Parallax zoom scrolling
The parallax effect is an animation technique wherein the foreground elements move faster than the background elements, creating a sense of realism and depth.
