This was such a fun project! Not only do we love a good dose of STEAM projects injected into the world, but this team were pros at collaborating! When you think summer camp, you don’t necessarily think of video games. But that’s exactly what the Open World team at DigiPen Institute of Technology has created as a focus for summer students age 5-18
They reached out to us for logo design, branding and website design/development with an eye towards tech and an easy to use admin (WordPress) to connect their CRM and workshop registration tool.
DigiPen has been preparing students to succeed as skilled engineers, artists, and designers in the growing technology industries since 1988. Open World by DigiPen is unlocking this huge world of technology to younger students by focusing on a STEAM approach to education. From sound FX to 3D, from fashion to graphic design, a wide range of skills are needed for future professionals, not just for creating a video game.
This feeling of unlocking a new world, starting up young people’s minds, and opening the door to this digital world all went into our branding and design of the Open World project. When you think World you first think of Earth and the letter O (of Open) leant itself to a perfect lock or button shaped logo. A glowing button that seems to be powering up, also reflected the technology based curriculum of Open World.
Like STEAM itself, creating and branding a website involves looking at the goal from many different angles. The usability of the interface (ux) as well as the visual design all have to work together with the technical and marketing needs of the project.
In this case, with interactivity being the focus, a static logo and its associated colours we’re only part of the design equation. We felt that the site needed some movement and animation. We met this goal by mixing web code based animation and digital motion graphics.
YourPlanB also created an entire branding guideline, including logo treatments and approved web and print colour pallets. The artwork created has already been used not only for the website, but also allowed the OpenWorld team to create letterhead, stickers and even shirts. A wide range of styles and colour treatments were created for them to be prepared for any circumstance.
A Photoshop user since the first version was introduced in 1990, DavidB constantly stays up to date with Adobe’s newest tools. JameyB and DavidB created their college’s first computer animation minor back in 1994.
From vector to raster images, editing audio and video, and now also an industry leader in animation tools, Adobe has it all. Their movement/animation based program After Effects allows YourPlanB to create animated elements – first designed in Photoshop and Illustrator – to use on the website. After Effects essentially brings to life anything you can do in Photoshop!
