Review: The RodeCaster Pro II

The popularity of podcasts is undeniable. With the beautifully written and acted Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building“, you know it’s hit the mainstream.

While technically possible, setting up a podcasting station for interviewing more than 1 person involved thousands of dollars of technical audio equipment. An Audio interface, headphone amplifier, VU meter, effects equipment, recording equipment, etc etc all added up. The good news is the tech wizards at Røde  – usually known for their microphones – have just created a small all-in-one solution… the RodeCaster Pro II

While still technically powerful and an understanding of mics and channels is still needed, the RodeCasterPro II is incredibly easy to use and has an amazingly small footprint. No more needed a dedicated audio cart with tons of equipment, this relatively lightweight can sit on your desk.

I like to keep things streamlined and organized and compact. Røde delivers delivers. It also keeps everything colour coded with matching colourful XLR cable clips making it easy to keep track of what Microphone is controlled by what fader. One of my favourite features is also the ability to route anything anywhere, and adjust the colour of the brightly lit pads (buttons). This keeps everything nice and simple. You’re even able to bring in a Bluetooth device (think someone calling on their iPhone) or USB device.

Recording to your favourite DAW is easy too – with multichannel recording. This allows you to record EVERY input on their own tracks and adjust volumes and apply any filter you want when you sit down to edit the podcast or interview. It can also be used as a Midi controller if you like to customize your DAW to have hands-on control as well as pointing and clicking with a mouse.

And it doesn’t stop at microphones, any 1/4″ plug can also be used. For instance you could have a musician play along with a singer and a mic’s piano. Or use the built in sound fx buttons, the RodeCasterPro II is an entire sound studio contained in a small consul sitting on your desk!

An all around amazing device, that they keep current with firmware updates every few weeks. Need help starting a podcasting?
