What are your 2020-2021 web goals?

WEB GOALS WISHLIST

What are your website goals for 2020?  SEO? Accessibility? More interactions? To help put together your wishlist, we have some hints, tips and trends for you to consider.  As always, if you need anything, please give us a call to discuss how to help you meet your web goals. We look forward to working with you and your team.  To get you started, use these four questions:

  1. Purpose? Ask yourself, “What do I want to accomplish with this page?” If a page doesn’t have a clear purpose, consider getting rid of it.
  2. Aesthetically pleasing? Your site needs to look good. If your site looks like it was built in the 90’s, it’s time for an update.
  3. Relevant and original content? Your site should show content that’s relevant to your target market and original.
  4. Clear site navigation? Navigation matters. Any page on your site should be within three clicks of any other page on your site. Your navigation should be intuitive and simple. This helps both Google for SEO and your visitors for navigation.

WEB GOALS CHECKLIST

Now that we have you thinking, here is a list of web goals compiled from conversations with our Drupal clients in 2019.  What are your top five goals?

  • Accessibility
  • Set up your SSL
  • Adjust content tone
  • Check image quality
  • Update any schedules
  • Fresh design (5 years is too old)
  • Increase social media connections
  • Evaluate email marketing
  • Add more video / movement
  • Keep branding consistent
  • Create strong CTAs
  • Fast loading time
  • SEO rich content
  • Responsive/Mobile Friendly
  • Easy Navigation (time to simplify?)
  • Color Scheme (still appropriate for your audience?)
  • Minimize text, use short sentences, shorter paragraphs, use more bullet lists
  • Show, don’t tell (use more visuals)
  • Make clickable elements large enough for mobile users
  • Design standards: logo in top left, content info top right, horizontal main menu, value proposition high on the page, CTA on home page, search in your header
  • Short contact forms (test the email address)

DRUPAL HOUSEKEEPING

Just like a closet or junk drawer, it is a good idea to do some Drupal housekeeping each year.  Content editors or my web team can help you with any of these tasks to help the site updates run smoother.

  1. Remove users who have been blocked or are no longer on the team
  2. Update your webforms (remove junk submissions)
  3. Clear out old PDFs, images, pages
  4. Locate orphan pages, connect them to your navigation
  5. Read through for content consistency
  6. Look for image consistency (out of date or overused imagery)
  7. Update any date specific or season specific content
  8. Add new employee information (remove outdated info – new headshots)
  9. Check your analytics – is the content on the most popular pages current?
  10. Are you using the most current version of Drupal?
  11. SEO review – what keywords are people using?
  12. How about 404 errors?  Let’s fix those broken links. (And maybe make a more creative error page message?)
  13. Are your social media links current?

Heads up!  This June a new version of Drupal launches – Drupal 9!  We strongly suggest you do not do major updates until AFTER this version release.  Drupal 8 will be end-of-life by November 2021. “We need to periodically remove deprecated functionality to keep Drupal modern, maintainable, and performant, and we need to stay on secure, supported versions of Drupal 8’s third-party dependencies.”   The first release of Drupal 9 will be very similar to the last minor release of Drupal 8 (unlike going from 7 to 8), as the primary goal of the Drupal 9.0.0 release will be to remove deprecated code and update third-party dependencies. By keeping your Drupal 8 sites up to date with our monthly maintenance, you should be well prepared for Drupal 9.
