TRAVEL ELECTRONICS
When a friend of ours announced his wedding, we realized we’d need to think about the long trip – because of course we were going to Hawaii for the big event!
With the beauty of the cloud – specifically Google, Evernote, Dropbox and BaseCamp, our documents and tools needed to check in with clients could all be handled by the Apple iPad.
It struck me, if I don’t have my laptop, there’s no way to backup my photos! In case you don’t know, I usually take a few thousand frames (photos) when we travel. So I assumed a trip to Hawaii would end up shooting twice as much because of the beautiful landscape and culture.
I always make a practice to have a backup residency system for my photos. I needed a way to make a backup of all the photos I took, just in case I lost one of my SD memory cards.
I started to pack my trusty Wolverine and realized that it had less storage space than one of my camera’s 64gb SD cards – it is almost 10 years old. With a little research, and my luck with Western Digital desktop drives, I found the WD MyPassport Wireless would do the trick.
Until I got it home, I didn’t realize how amazing this tiny drive is! It holds an amazing 2TB (vs the now tiny 60GB Wolverine) and allows you to copy files automatically from your SD card to the drive, without needing a computer! The USB 3 interface allows for powering up in the wall outlet our connected to a computer. For the explorer photographer however, it can also run on the internal battery for a few hours.
Another advantage over the old systems, is built in WiFi, like the GoPro, which creates it’s own little WiFi hotspot, allowing you to view all the photos on the drive from your mobile device (phone, iPad, etc).
I’ve also read you can also stream movies, music etc to the iPad for hours and hours of entertainment, but for me, it is a more than photo capable backup solution while in the field.
