Responsive Design – what is it?

We get the request for Responsive Design regularly from potential clients.

If you haven’t thought about RWD (aka Responsive Web Design) for your website, now might be the time and put together a plan. What is it? Well simply put it is making sure your website looks good on any device from a desktop to a mobile phone. There is more to it – from designing a fluid layout to using clear media queries to viewport.

A quick way to see if your site is responsive is to shorten the width of your browser window on your desktop and see what happens. (Of course you could try it on your mobile device too!)

Not every website needs to be RWD right now, but eventually with the increase of use of mobile devices, it will become more important. Take a look at your visitor statistics and watch how users are viewing your site (mobile options, browsers). This will dictate when you need to consider a redesign and responsive design.

We recently refreshed our website into a RWD. It looks (and works) good on a desktop, good on a phone and tablet. Since most people browse our site to get contact info, read our bios and check out our blog (including new site launches) – we could keep our design and code “simple”. If we are talking shopping carts (E-commerce) it is another discussion all together!

Give us a call to discuss if your site needs to go RWD right now or with your next round of refreshes.
