Please leave a message at the beep

Ever get the voicemail message “Hey it’s me.  Call me right back!”

Or the email with the subject line “Call me”

Unless you are on fire, this type of message is not helpful.  Instead, try to give more information to the person you are trying to connect with.  Remember, they may be just as busy as you are.  Clear communication can speed up any resolutions.

Tips for efficient voice mail messages:

– think first!  before you pick up the phone, think about what you need to say so you don’t ramble and get cut off by the phone system

– introduce yourself

– speak slowly and clearly (especially if you are calling from a cell phone)

– be informative, but brief

– end the call with your name (again) and your phone number

– and smile when you speak (unless of course it is an angry call)
